The difference between E71T-11 and E71T-GS

E71T-11 and E71T-GS both belong to AWS A5.20 carbon steel self-shielded flux-cored welding wire (FCAW-S). They do not require external shielding gas and are very suitable for outdoor or gasless environment operations. They are usually welded with DCEN (DC reverse: wire negative electrode). However, the positioning of the two is completely different: E71T-GS prefers thin plates, one-time welding, and light maintenance; E71T-11 prefers general-purpose structural welding and can be multi-layer and multi-pass welding.

1. Number of welding passes and base metal thickness

• E71T-GS: Designed for single-pass welding (Single-Pass). It is mainly used for rapid welding of thin plate metals (such as automobile bodies, iron art or thin steel plates). It is not suitable for thick plates or structural parts withstanding high strength.

• E71T-11: supports single-pass and multi-pass welding (Multi-Pass), can handle thicker steel (usually less than 3/4 inches), has a wider range of applications, and has stronger structural adaptability.

2. Standard certification and mechanical properties

The “GS” in E71T-GS means General Steel, which does not have a unified and strict AWS (American Welding Society) standard specification. Formulations and mechanical properties may vary between manufacturers, and tensile strength is usually lower.

• E71T-11 strictly follows the AWS A5.20 standard and has stable and reliable mechanical properties and higher tensile strength.

3. Application scenarios

• E71T-GS is mostly used by home DIY, hobbyists and temporary repairs of thin and light parts.

• E71T-11 is widely used in outdoor building construction, machinery manufacturing and formal welding of light structural frames.

In summary

if you are looking for simple and light-weight daily repairs, you can choose E71T-GS. For structural welding involving multiple layers and multiple passes or where strength is required, you should choose the standard E71T-11.
