After people inhaled the fume and dust, can cause dizziness, headache, cough, chest tightness and shortness of breath, etc. Long-term inhalation will cause fibrous lesions of lung tissue, i.e., welder’s pneumoconiosis, and is often accompanied by complications such as manganese poisoning, fluorosis and metal fume fever. The onset and development of welding pneumoconiosis is slow, with few and mild symptoms in the early stages of the disease, and no conscious symptoms in the X-ray chest film. The most common symptoms are cough, sputum, chest pain, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Pulmonary function tests are inconspicuous in the early stages, but as the disease progresses, impairment of ventilation and air exchange can occur.

Welders’ pneumoconiosis must be prevented early, and welding related enterprises and welders should take the following occupational hazard protection measures.

 

1, Improve the ventilation of the workplace.

Ventilation is divided into natural ventilation and mechanical ventilation, of which mechanical ventilation of dust removal, detoxification effect is better, and therefore in places with poor natural ventilation, closed or semi-closed structure welding, there must be mechanical ventilation measures. It is worth noting that many manual arc welding places, especially in the summer, if using fans to directly blow the fume ventilation, which will cause the fume diffusion throughout the workshop, more hazardous.

2, Improve personal protection.

Welding operators must use dust masks, as well as helmets, protective glasses, gloves, earmuffs, etc. in line with occupational health requirements; if working in closed or semi-closed institutions, you also need to wear the use of air supply masks.

 

3, Improve welding technology and the welding process and materials.

By improving the degree of mechanization and automation of welding, so that the operator and the operating environment isolated, fundamentally eliminate the hazards of welding operations on the human body; by improving the welding process, reduce the construction of closed structures to improve the operating conditions of the operator to reduce welding fume pollution; at the same time, improve the welding rod materials, choose non-toxic or low-toxic welding rod, is also one of the effective measures to reduce welding hazards.

4, Pay attention to occupational health inspection and workplace testing.

The employer should conduct regular testing and evaluation of the dust and toxic hazards of the welding workplace, and regular occupational health inspections of the workforce to detect problems in a timely manner and prevent and control occupational diseases. Occupational health inspection and workplace hazards detection must be carried out in accordance with relevant laws and regulations norms and standards.

 

5, Strengthen occupational health education.

The employer should conduct the necessary education on occupational health knowledge for welding operators, enhance awareness of self-protection, consciously comply with the occupational health management system, and do a good job of self-protection.
